Hey Dr. Tippery,
I have seen the moss graffiti instructions before, but have yet to try it myself at home. I feel like I do plenty of moss growing in the lab and maybe too much so to bring it home. I think that the graphics on this website are particularly well done. It may be time for a subversive graffiti post!

The "hair capped" mosses are in the genus Polytrichum, but I would not recommend those for transplanting. You might check out a couple of books on moss gardening. I would recommend moving the mosses around your yard that are already growing in a similar light and moisture location. That way you will be using local mosses that are already adapted to the location where you live.

This idea came about when the website that I used to get my desktop calendars from stopped putting them out. I really like having a calendar on my computer desktop so I decided to give them a try. The only problem I can see with the name is that the suffix '-ensis' indicates a location. So the name 'renzagliensis' indicates that Dr Renzaglia had the hornwort in question growing directly on her person, which doesn't sound particularly pleasant for all concerned. The more appropriate form would have been 'renzagliae'.

While it seems like a good idea to honor those scientists who have dedicated their lives to help elucidate the biology and evolution of said group of animals, many time organisms are named after people who have no association at all with the species in question.

Although, naming an organism after a famous scientist is far better than naming a new genus or species after a certain location or province, as has been the case recently in vertebrate paleontology. While naming an organism after the region it is found makes sense for endemic species with a small range, like the above-mentioned hornworts, it does not make sense for wide-ranging species like dinosaurs, such as many of the new species coming out of Asia. It gets really annoying when multiple species are named after the same city or region, as is the case for Linhe (Linhenykus, Linheraptor, Linhevenator) or Zhucheng (Zhuchengtyrannus, Zhuchengceratops, Zhuchengsaurus). This isn't limited to Asia (Paluxysaurus and Albertaceratops from across the Pacific also come to mind), but the frequency of "name-and-place-asauruses" can get a little irritating to some. It also leads to the rather awkward explanation of why a species is named after a location if its remains have also been found in many other localities across of the continent or its range is much larger than the name suggests.

I visited the Moss Temple in 1980. Unfortunately I didn't know one moss from another at the time. Still, the place made a huge impression on me.That includes the workers with rakes and pointed hats. When I was in Maine last summer in woods that had nearly all-moss ground cover, I was reminded of Japan. (These woods were part of the Nature Conservancy's land in the Blue Hill peninsula.)
In 1980 I must have paid about $20 to the Buddhist group that runs the Temple and there was a brief service which as I recall gave us blessings and made us members. Japan has so many gardens I wish I could have visited - anyone going should look them up as well. -Sally

The transformation to -ae isn't a spelling error as such. Many Greek words carried into English came via Latin, and they've been adjusted slightly to match Latin grammar. Another example of this is how we refer to 'hippopotamus' and 'hippopotami' rather than 'hippopotamos' and 'hippopotamoi' (the Greek masculine ending -os has been adjusted to its Latin equivalent -us).
